The late Bishop Dennis J. McMurray and Dr. E. Jean Lackey-McMurray made a life-changing commitment in 1996 to positively impact the lives of children, teens, and young adults, and adults when they founded AWAKE, Inc., a federally registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Since its inception, AWAKE has focused on academic achievement, scholarships, and life sustainability and development initiatives.

Their efforts have benefited a wide range of recipients, including students from Greater Grand Rapids and surounding Districts, Grand Valley State University (GVSU), Muskegon Community College (MCC), and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), as well as participants in Summer STEM programs, life achievement and enrichment initiatives, back-to-school events, and various community enhancement projects. Numerous individuals pursuing higher education have also been empowered by the opportunities and support provided through their unwavering dedication.
